  • Random Dyed Yarn

The first dye lot of the Dappled Range is here.

    Dappled Lime Green.

Random dyeing is not quite as simple with natural dyes as it is with chemical dyes but the results are more harmonious.

The yarn first has to be mordanted with alum and then dyed yellow using Weld.

Once it has been washed to remove any loose dye material it is dyed to a light green in the indigo vat. After which it is carefully shibori tied and then dipped several times in the indigo vat.... more

  • Sale of Large 125g Hanks

After a couple of long dyeing sessions there are always the inevitable shades that don't match up to the colours on the range. Sometimes these can be re-dyed but often the colours are so nice it seems a pity not to offer them to you at a reduced price.

There are now a few new shades up on the sales page, some of which are a result of the reaction between the ph of the local water and the logwood dye.

Logwood has a very narrow ph window in which it gives a good blue purple, shift the ph too far one way and the blue disappears. Shift it even further and all the dye spectrum disappears! I've learned not to do that but it was fun experimenting. The Aubergine shade below is just a little too red.... more

  • Harlequin Shawl

Arriving in a day or two, ready for autumn and those even chillier winter days, the New Renaissance Dyeing Harlequin Shawl Kit.

It is a simple neckerchief size shawl measuring 120 cm / 48 ins across the top and it is 60 cm / 24 ins long. Harlequin is fine and light and is designed for everyday wear.

It is the combination of an easy traditional pattern and an intarsia technique motive which calls for a bit of experience or a lot of patience to give it a try.

The main body of the shawl is worked in a self decreasing traditional pattern, of fern and diamond patterns, which are easy to learn and remember. Once mastered you can begin the coloured diamonds in as many different colours as you wish. Each of our 25m skeins will knit about 16 diamonds.... more

Yes they are here. Ready for the the run up to Christmas and the chilly weather, when it finally arrives! Two wonderful designs by up-and-coming young American designer Miriam Felton.

It is also possible for you to e-mail me and change the colours in the kit to those of your choice. Tongues of fire through asphalt? Flower beds in between a box hedge?... more
