The powder of the bark is known as tan, an indication of its centuries of use to tan leather. Oak bark is very high in tannins making it suitable for the dyeing of cellulose fibres as well as animal fibres.

Wool (with iron after-bath), Wool/silk, Wool, Silk and Cotton. The variation in shade of the last two skeins is produced by changing the ph of the water.
