The Winning Patterns from the Renaissance Dyeing Competition

Here are the two winning patterns from this years Renaissance Dyeing Knitting Competition. The Diamonds in the Ropes Shawl by Teri Lindstrom from America and The Maple Leaf Shrug by Cristiana Brenna from Italy.

The Maple Leaf Shrug

In the non-lace section the winner was Cristiana Brenna with her Maple Leaf Shrug.

Here in Cristiana's own words is how this lovely shrug came about

the shrug

I was considering a sort of wrap with a “ragged look” made by many fluttering ends and this brought me to the shape of the maple leaves. I doubled the yarn and I found out a fabulous elastic texture so I left the ragged idea behind, but I saved the leaves!

I focused my attention on colours and I tried to blend the three colours that I had chosen in every possible combination, looking for smooth and harsh transitions too.

Finally I looked for a suitable stitch pattern that was agreeable on both sides of knitting….and I found out “the only one” that could help in blending colours!

The Diamonds in the Ropes Shawl

Here are Teri Lindstrom's words about the creation of her Diamonds in the Ropes pattern which was the winner in the lace section.

With most of my designs I let the garment take shape as I go along. This was the first time I actually started the pattern on a piece of paper (actually on the computer but you get the idea).

Each garment is different but the inspiration comes at least partially from the yarn I am using - the color, the texture, sometimes even the name given by the yarn dyer/manufacturer. For this pattern, the yarn struck me as perfect for an Orenburg styled shawl and that is what it became.

I had a wonderful time making this for the contest and I still pinching myself that I actually won. "I want to thank my good friend Diane, for modeling the shawl in the picture"
