A few weeks ago now we went to collect some of our Poll Dorset 4 ply wool from northern Italy where it is combed and spun. It was a heartening experience to spend some days in Biella with the folk of Biella, The Wool Company. They were hosting the annual Feltrosa felt-in, the 'Wools of Europe exhibition' and the exhibition 'The Felt of the Shaman' which included a dance performance. To take part in all that, in such beautiful surroundings with such warm friendly people is something I will certainly repeat, picking up the 4-ply wool was an added bonus.

Below Carmine de Luca of Biella, the Wool Company explaining the wool sorting process.

In brief: Biella, The Wool Company. are a consortium who will take relatively small quantities of wool direct from the shepherd and using the highly skilled facilities at their disposal in the ancient wool spinning town of Biella in northern Italy, they will turn it into a woollen yarn that the shepherds can market as they wish.

2) The Wools of Europe Exhibition has been set up by two no-profit-making associations, Association ATELIER - Laines d’Europe and Consorzio Biella the Wool Company. The Wools of Europe exhibition highlights one hundred European sheep breeds from 27 European countries and articles made from the very same wool. Venues are being sought for the exhibition in the UK. 3) Feltrosa is an annual meeting of felters sponsored by ’associazione culturale Coordinamento Tessitori'. There were over 90 participants. I went to work with Irit Dulman and have come away eyeing every plant as a possible source of print.

That was not difficult, on the way home as all down the Haute Alpes region of France there was woad growing along the road side and on all uncultivated patches. So if you grow woad in your garden do pull the plant out before it goes to seed as it can be very invasive.

Il ya quelques semaines maintenant, nous sommes allés à recueillir une partie de notre Poll Dorset biologique 4-plis fils à partir de nord de l'Italie où il est peigné et filé. Ce fut une expérience encourageante pour passer quelques jours à Biella avec les gens de Biella, The Wool Company. Ils ont été accueilli la Feltrosa annuelle de faire feutre, les Laines d'Europe'exposition et l'exposition Le feutre du chaman avec spectacle de danse. Pour prendre part à tout ce qui, dans un tel entoure belle avec ces amis des gens chaleureux est quelque chose que je vais certainement répéter, ramasser la laine 4-plis était un avantage supplémentaire.

3) [Feltrosa] (http://www.feltrosa.com/) est une réunion annuelle de la felters parrainés par «Associazione Culturale Tessitori Coordinamento .. Il y avait plus de 90 participants. Je suis allé à travailler avec [Irit Dulman] (http://www.flickr.com/photos/irit_dulman/) et nous sommes venus loin regardant chaque plante comme une source possible d'imprimer.

Ce n'était pas difficile sur le chemin du retour, comme sur toute la région de la Haute Alpes de France, il a été pastel qui poussent le long de la côté de la route et sur tous les champs incultes. Donc, si vous cultivez le pastel dans votre jardin faire le tirer avant il va aux semences car il peut être très envahissante.
