With what will you dye it?

We will first be using the dye stuffs that have been tried and tested over the centuries, that is madder, weld and woad or indigo.

Then in our 'what happens ...

Wool Slogan

Written by [email protected] on Dec. 7, 2018 in Bulletin, competition, La Laine, merinos d'arles, Poll Dorset

Our fingering knitting wools are different to many others found on the market in that they are what is called equitable, i.e. fair trade. Our yarn is not mass produced at a greatly reduced price but is bought from French shepherds at a price that makes it possible for them to continue their work unencumbered. The only people between you and the shepherdesses, Sheila and Pascaline are the spinning mill in Biella, Italy and us the natural dyers, here in France.

We would like you to help us find a short catchy slogan to help bring our wool and ...

Bulletin du printemps 2018

Written by [email protected] on March 10, 2018 in Dye House News, Events, La Laine, Markets, Poll Dorset, workshops

Spring 2018 Newsletter

Written by [email protected] on March 9, 2018 in Dye House News, Events, Markets, Poll Dorset, workshops

Hello, Yes, Spring IS slowly approaching, time of buds and sproutings. It is still too wet to start in the dye garden but the plans are already in place.

By July it will be high summer and the dye plants will be in bloom and at their best, I hope. There is still a place or two to share this with us on this year's July workshop.

Spring is also a time of birds and nest building and you can do just that with the Kea Pullover designed by Bristol Ivy with its border and yoke of fascinating feathers ...

a saddening day

Written by [email protected] on Sept. 29, 2017 in Dye House News, La Laine, Natural Dye Plants, Poll Dorset

Somewhere in one of those memory compartments that I haven't opened for decades are images of the Kalavala, meteoric iron and autumn. This is a Finnish folklore poem that contains elements of the Michael and the dragon imagery.

It joggled back up to the surface today as I am in the process of turning some brilliant summer wool dyeing in to autumn colours with the aid of iron.. not meteoric alas just plain old homemade iron acetate (a future blog post!). Though I bet meteoric iron would work better! This treatment with iron which is known as saddening has ...
