Story of a sweater
The stunning Lady and the Unicorn tapestries at the Musee de Cluny in Paris were created in about 1500 using wool and natural dyes such as madder, woad and weld. They are believed to represent the five senses. Each one features a lady and her maidservant, a unicorn, a lion and numerous small birds and animals, as well as trees and plants. The background colour is red, dyed with madder, which has not noticeably faded in all the five hundred varied years since the tapestries were woven. This is a remarkable testament to the durability of natural dyes. Sections of ...

Michaelmas 2019 newsletter
Back in the old days (whenever and wherever they were) Michaelmas was one of the big land festivals when people would gather together to exchange goods in preparation for the winter and also find new work as at the end of the busy summer season, itinerant land workers sought shelter for the winter. Both men and women looked ahead to hard winter times lightened for both by the thought that when the cold work was done they could draw around the fire and spin or knit and listen to the old tales that thrilled their hearts and guided them to ...

New fermentation dyed yarn up on web-site. These limited editions are fermented itogether with madder root and weld and then later dipped in the indigo vat. Because of the method involved there are only 12 hanks in this latest Merinos d'Arles edition, which because of its earthy and fiery tones we have named Lava. You will find it at the bottom of the Batches and Bundles page
An increasing number of people are using our naturally dyed wools for punchneedling (is there a verb - 'to punchneedle' I wonder?) In particular the fine crewel wool lends itself to punchneedling, having ...

Wool Slogan
Our fingering knitting wools are different to many others found on the market in that they are what is called equitable, i.e. fair trade. Our yarn is not mass produced at a greatly reduced price but is bought from French shepherds at a price that makes it possible for them to continue their work unencumbered. The only people between you and the shepherdesses, Sheila and Pascaline are the spinning mill in Biella, Italy and us the natural dyers, here in France.
We would like you to help us find a short catchy slogan to help bring our wool and ...
